Mini-open Procedure
Mini-open carpal tunnel release has been the focus of recent attention for surgical decompression of carpal tunnel syndrome. It has been widely used as a surgical alternative for patients who are resistant to the conservative treatments.
This minimally invasive surgical technique uses a single one cm skin incision to allow a modified open decompression of the carpal tunnel. It allows complete direct visualization of the transverse carpal ligament and has lowered the occurrence of scar formation and wound discomfort. It is also safer than the endoscopic approach since the median nerve and the carpal tunnel is directly visualised during the procedure.
After surgery, the skin surface loses its biomechanical movements and elasticity even in the normal wound healing process. The limited skin incision occupies only a small area on the surface of the hand, providing more movement capability, elasticity and better appearance to the skin surface.
This mini -open, single skin incision technique for median nerve release can be used in the surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome to achieve a better appearance. Clinical data has shown that this technique provides excellent results with respect to grip and pinch function, and cosmetic results.
Patients operated on with this technique have an easier postoperative experience compared with the standard incision.
