Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Procedure

Carpal tunnel surgery can be performed using a Mini-open technique or with Endoscopic technique.
The endoscopic carpal tunnel release (Two portal technique)
involves making  two small incisions in the hand and forearm and the surgeon uses a camera to assist in viewing the carpal tunnel and perform the surgery. The surgery is not performed under direct visualisation of the carpal tunnel and median nerve, resulting in an increased risk of injury to the median nerve and increased risk of incomplete release of the carpal tunnel.

The possibility of nerve injury is slightly higher with the endoscopic technique, and injury to the median nerve or vessels or in cases of incomplete carpal tunnel release would need the use of open carpal tunnel surgery to directly visualise and adequately treat the condition. The patient’s recovery and return to work with the endoscopic technique may be quicker in some cases.

However, Endoscopic carpal tunnel release, though a relatively easier procedure, leads to neurovascular injuries more frequently than open surgery; thus open surgery is generally considered to be safer. The mini-open technique aliows the advantages of a minimally invasive technique, with a single small incision, and the safety of the open approach.
