Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome or CTS is a common problem that
affects the use of your hand. You may be experiencing symptoms if you: Sometimes feel numbness, weakness, a tingling
sensation or experience pain in your wrist and hand, particularly at night.
The carpal tunnel is formed by the bones, tendons and
ligaments surrounding the median nerve. It supplies sensation to the thumb,
index and middle finger, and provides motion to the muscles of the thumb and hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome most often occurs when
this nerve becomes inflamed after being aggravated by repetitive movements.
These movements could include typing on a computer keyboard,
playing the piano or participating in daytime activities requiring you to bend
your wrist . The condition may cause narrowing or compression of this median
nerve (think “pinched” nerve).
The majority of people with carpal tunnel syndrome recover
completely. Only about one percent develop permanent injury. Avoid re-injury by
altering the way you perform repetitive tasks, the frequency with which you
perform the movements, and how much rest you get between these periods of
movement.
Neurosurgeons like Dr. Siddiqi of Houston’s Carpal Tunnel Clinic are medical
specialists trained to help patients who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome,
among other illnesses. Dr. Siddiqi provides prevention, diagnosis, evaluation,
treatment, critical care and rehabilitation (operative and non-operative care)
of neurological disorders.
Dr. Siddiqi’s primary role is diagnosis, interpretation of
test results, and, when necessary, surgery. He is certified by the American
Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS), the certification body which is
considered the “gold standard” in the field.
